Analytical Engine
2023

Our goal is to emulate a working computer inspired by the Analytical Engine proposed by Charles Babbage in 1837 on an FPGA. This would include implementing the Engine’s key architecture - the mill (analogous to an ALU), the store (memory), the reader (input), and the printer (output) - with a design that incorporates elements faithful to Babbage’s initial ideation and writings translated by Ada Lovelace, while taking necessary “shortcuts” through the FPGA platform for the sake of feasibility. On the physical side, we plan to build a custom punch card reader and an output “display” with a thermal printer module as a nod to the Engine’s original design. We will start small, and aim to implement basic computer functionalities (basic arithmetic operations, registers, etc.) before moving on to expanding those features and building the physical aspects of the machine.
